After Sarah left the craft show, she headed back to the house to drop some items off, and was happy to notice that the electric was finally back on, and the interior was nice and cool.

Sarah threw her head back in relief. “Thank goodness. We have electric again.”

She could only savor the electricity for ten minutes though before heading back over to the Monarch Coffeehouse in order to help fill in for the staff shortage. It was nice to give her employees a little break while she could because in only two days she’d leave for Costa Rica. She had potential employees lined up to interview tomorrow, and hopefully, she could find some good ones to start after the coffeehouse reopened when she got home at the end of the month.

When she finished closing up at the coffeehouse, she grabbed some pastries, threw them in a bag, and headed over to the dock. She knew Chris would be there tidying up after the sunset cruise. The lights were on inside the small shop Chris owned on the dock, and his employee was standing behind the counter when Sarah stuck her head in.

“Hey, Neil. Is Chris here?”

Neil shook his head. “You just missed him. Were you bringing us treats again? Because I’m starving,” he said as he eyed the pastry bag.

Sarah smiled and tossed it to him. “Yes, I was. Have at ’em.”

Neil took a bite of a raspberry cheese croissant. “This is amazing. I haven’t eaten anything since lunch. Thank you for this.”

Sarah nodded. “Sure thing. So, I hear you guys are busy this coming week. Lots of birding trips booked?”

Neil shrugged. “Not that I’m aware of. As far as I know, we don’t have a single thing booked. Earlier, I looked on the calendar he keeps in the back, and it’s blank.”

Sarah paused, deep in thought. “Why would he lie to me about that? Had he had cancellations? Between that and the electric, something doesn’t seem right.”

Neil looked at Sarah, who’s eyes were fixated on something in the distance. “Earth to Sarah. You there?”

Sarah snapped out of her thoughts. “Yes—sorry, I was just thinking. Well, enjoy the pastries. I have to go get ready for my interviews tomorrow.”

Sarah walked out to her car feeling very confused about the entire day. And it had surely been a weird one. In fact, her whole week had left her utterly mystified.
